Wadi Rum, Jordan's ruby
We were in Aqaba, the port city of the Red Sea, which we chose as a starting point for the two objectives we had to visit during our stay in Jordan. A long rumble and a croaking voice from the other end of the line tells us that it is 7 o'clock. We got up bumpy and slightly irritated. It was a short night, because, after we returned from Petra, we stayed at stories in the reception of the hotel with other tourists. We took the breakfast on the run and started with quick steps to the meeting place with the taxi driver who was expecting to take us to the Wadi Rum desert.
As I told you in the previous article, the Jordan Pass card, which we purchased from Romania, covered only the entrance fee (5 JOD). To go to the desert we could take the local minibusses (a ticket costs 3 JOD, about $ 4 / person) or the JETT buses (a round trip ticket costs 180 JOD, about $ 25 / person). While the previous do not have a fixed schedule (they leave when they are full), the others leave daily at 8 and return at 4 pm. Another option was a taxi (50 JOD, about $ 70). Regardless of the option, from the visitor center we had to arrange the tour with a field car. We opted for a taxi. We agreed with the driver, for another 10 JOD, to wait 3 hours. The distance from Aqaba-Wadi Rum we traveled in 60 minutes. The story of the desert, told by a Bedouin in a slalom field car in the dunes, cost us 50 JOD.
Wadi Rum, a spectacular desert area, chosen as a setting for famous films like Lawrence of Arabia or Martian, fascinated us. Dunes and rocks of millions of years old, windy, rising from orange-reddish sand and compose a painting that you will certainly never forget.
Back, front, right, left, nobody. Only the jeep was able to disturb the peace. The engine sounded like a huge bumper when the car climbed the dunes, following which, when descending, the noise was covered by our screams of joy, doubled by the echo coming from the distance.
We took full advantage of the perfect weather and, climbing up, we climbed the dunes so that we could take it down the stream running zigzag, leaving a cloud of dust behind us.
In the sky, an unreal light caused the mountains to shine. A skilled painter painted the sky when in blue, when in purple. The calm that floated in the air gave us the feeling that we were beyond time. We could only hear our heartbeat.
After the 3 hours of safari, we left for Aqaba promising that one day we will return to live the unique experience of staying in the desert, in a tent with a transparent roof, perfect to watch the millions of stars.
