Where to eat in Sliema and Saint Julian
February was for us the month of culinary delights. Malta was the place that tempted us with extraordinary Maltese dishes. If you are a gourmet or if you like sweet food, this is the right place. Terraces all the way around and a good weather, makes you rest longer and walk less. Although we had the opportunity to have breakfast at the hotel where we were staying, we chose to start our day at a terrace nearby. It turned out to be a perfect choice, as they abound in products and for sure you can find something on your taste. Located on the promenade, small restaurants thought up to the last detail and impeccable service makes you enjoy the holiday.
La Crema Siciliana is a place you must not miss if you are in Saint Julian's!! The best coffee will turn your day into a special one. Cakes ... Heaven! They are so good that you can't stop anymore, even though you initially thought of just trying them. Whether it's a chocolate cake or a goat cheese cream and pistachio, pistachio muffins, they give you addiction. Every day you can find something new so you just have to try and keep trying. Breakfast is also one to keep in mind, so La Crema Siciliana is the perfect place to stop. Marsha will take care of you for sure. For an extraordinary coffee you do not have to get out of pocket more than 1.70 euros (depending on the assortment) and for a cake 5 euros. All products are homemade, and the result is fabulous!
If you feel too guilty because you could not stop eating the sweet that took you prisoner by La Crema Siciliana you will find near, Crudo. A place where you can start your morning with a slice of rye bread with hummus and avocado (4.75 euros) or you can choose focaccia with salmon, lemon and vegetables. The price of focaccia starts at 5.50 euros and reaches 8.50 euros. You can not complete your breakfast without a natural juice or a smoothie, because the range is very wide and the sensational taste. You can choose from apple, mint, lemon, cucumber, grapefruit to spirulina or turmeric. The price of a natural juice is 3.75 euros (small glass) / 4.95 euros (large glass), and a smoothie 3.95 (small) / 5.75 (large) euros. Crudo is a good choice for vegetarians, vegans or simply for those who have a healthy lifestyle.
Bocconcino, also located in St. Julian is the place where you feel great. The atmosphere is warm, with a retro air, with music you listen to in the deaf and with a breakfast prepared carefully by a passionate cook. Being a family business, you feel welcome from the first moment. It is also a favorite place of the locals, so the atmosphere is a typical Maltese one. The coffee is good, the fresh orange juice, the same. Bocconcino has personality and this makes it special. A latte takes you out of pocket 2 euros, and a breakfast reaches somewhere around 6 euros.
Another place not to be missed is Manouche. The perfect combination of Maltese and French cuisine makes the dishes seamless. I have never eaten a salmon better than the one prepared here (I even want to specify that salmon is smoked and prepared by them). Honestly, it has nothing to do with what I have eaten so far and I have tried it in various ways because it is my favorite fish. The combination with asparagus ... unreal. The coffee is incredible, from the Americano that has a special creaminess, to the perfect Latte. The cakes are so precious that you are sorry to taste them so you don't ruin their perfect shape. An Americano costs 2 euros (as well as a Latte), Norwegian eggs 11 euros, an omelet 6 euros, plus a few euros for each added ingredient. Cakes cost 5 euros. Whether you go for breakfast, lunch or dinner, you will not be disappointed. Manouche is an artisan pastry and bistro for the most exquisite tastes.
Tiffany's Bistro, in Sliema, is another place where food is art. About cakes, there is no point in talking, because the pictures say more than a thousand words. I can only tell you that the taste is divine, whatever you choose. A bistro with local, Mediterranean cuisine is the perfect place to relax at any time of the day. To be sure you find a table, especially for dinner, make a reservation because the place is extremely popular. You can try anything: from soup - most often from fish, seafood pizza, to Maltese rabbit or beef steak. They received the Certificate of Excellence in 2019. One rabbit dish costs 16.50 euros, 1 kg of shellfish 16.50 euros, a seafood pizza 13.50 euros, pork ribs 17 euros. For macchiato, you get out of pocket 2.40 euros, and for a beer 3.50 euros.
To temper our longing for Cuba, in the evening we chose a Cuban-specific restaurant. In a relaxing atmosphere, with traditional music, we chose to sit outside. It was the perfect place to enjoy a glass of extremely flavored local wine. We didn't eat here, so I can't tell you anything about the food, but everything I've seen looks sensational. A glass of wine costs 4.95 euros, a beer 3.65 euros, and a latte of 2.65 euros. The bistro is also located in St. Julian and it's called simple - CUBA.
A take away called Sea Salt, near our hotel, brought us in front of the best octopus burger. A small place, with fresh fish, from where you can choose what you want, is, I think, one of the best fast foods in Malta if I’m getting about the taste. Octopus is unreal. Potatoes, a combination of classic and sweet potatoes. Calories? We had to walk for a while...
An octopus burger costs 11.30 euros.
If you do not want to go anymore to the restaurants, you can choose a portion of noodles to enjoy on the water's edge, ashore. The noise of the sea and the fishermen will keep you company, along with locals and tourists who no longer remove their heads from the box with Chinese flavors. A cook prepares everything in front of you, and the result is beyond expectations. The most expensive portion of noodles costs 6.50 euros (organic green tea noodles) plus a few euros for each chosen ingredient (0.75 euros carrots, broccoli, green onions, 1.50 euros spinach, 1 euros eggs, 2.25 euros cashew, 3 euros waist, 2 euro chicken, etc.). For our portion, we paid 15 euros and it was enough for two people. The restaurant is called Noodle Box and is located in Sliema, near the ferryboat that goes to Valletta.
Maltese food is a surprising blend of aromas, extremely fragrant and with a sweet taste. From gourmet hamburgers with fish meat to rabbit prepared with garlic and wine, chefs compete in making dishes as surprising as possible. Having a Mediterranean cuisine, seafood plays an important role. Burger with octopus, seafood pizza, fish soup or pies is just a few examples of dishes that are worth a try. With strong Sicilian influences, sweets are hard to ignore. Whatever you want to keep aside, it's hard not to try them. And I don't recommend it! They're perfect! Coffee is sensational( Do not forget about La Crema Siciliana). If you were not already dependent, you will become. The food portions are quite large, so be careful when ordering.
